Cancer Patients Get Help from Financial Coaches

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Financial Planning Association of Massachusetts have joined together to set up a financial coaching program for cancer patients and their caregivers. Patients and caregivers face the challenge of fighting cancer and managing their finances everyday.  These burdens may be increased by healthcare costs, income loss, travel expenses to obtain healthcare, and other financial stressors.  The new program is groundbreaking and one of the first of its kind.

Participants may receive help with budgeting, debt management, estate planning, and insurance.  The feedback from current patients receiving financial coaching is positive.  Dana-Farber has identified a need and created a program to fill that need for its patients.

As a social worker, I find it challenging to find financial resources for my clients suffering from mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other asbestos-related diseases.  I applaud organizations that can and do help in this area.  I hope more hospitals and treatment facilities will find ways to decrease the financial burdens our clients face.
